CENTERS RECEIVE A $1.5 MILLION DOLLAR INCREASE TO STATE
APPROPRIATION FOR FY 1999-2000
ALBANY - August 3,
1999.
As the New York State legislative session ended in
early August 1999, the statewide network of Independent Living Centers were
pleased to find out that their state appropriation received a $1.5 million
dollar increase. The additional funding was long overdue and was the result of
a cooperative and persistent advocacy effort combined with a broad base of
support from all avenues of state leadership, which included the Governor,
Senate, Assembly, and the New York State Regents and Education Department. This
action elevated the total state appropriation to slightly more than $9.5
million dollars. The $1.5 million dollar increase represented half of the $3
million dollars requested by the statewide network of centers, based on over
six previous years of level funding. The funds will begin to address some of
the negative effects imposed by trends of diminished service capacity and staff
turnover. The statewide network of centers will seek another $1.5 million
dollar increase in the upcoming fiscal year to achieve the original request of
$3 million dollars.
