WASHINGTON, DC (07/22/04) Brad
Williams, executive director of the New York State Independent Living Council
(NYSILC), received the Thomas Paine Award for his efforts to ensure the voting
rights of Americans with disabilities. The award was presented by the American
Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) at their 14th Annual ADA
Celebration held at the U.S. Government Printing Office.
Williams' speech criticized New York
State for its irresponsible actions. "In New York, the road to election reform
has been marked by many shameful acts," declared Williams. "The wherewithal to
fight this blatant injustice is best found in a quote by Thomas
Jefferson
Dissent is the highest form of patriotism!" An energized crowd
repeated the quote throughout his speech. |
